You’ve done it! You’ve invested in the brows of your dreams. They are symmetrical, the color is perfect, and your morning routine has never been faster. Now, the goal is simple: keep them looking that way for as long as possible.
I love seeing my clients back for their yearly touch-ups with pigment that still looks crisp and beautiful. While every skin type is different, one of the best ways to ensure your microblading stays "fresh" is to be mindful of your daily skincare routine.
Many of the high-end products we love for a youthful glow contain what we call "Actives." These are ingredients designed to move skin cells along quickly. That’s great for your complexion, but we want to keep those active ingredients away from your brow pigment to maintain that perfect definition.
The "Big Four" to Keep at a Distance
To keep your brow strokes looking sharp and true-to-color, simply avoid applying these ingredients directly onto your brow area:
Retinol & Retin-A: These are amazing for anti-aging, but they work by encouraging the skin to shed layers. To keep your pigment settled exactly where it belongs, simply stop your retinol application just above the brow bone.
Glycolic & Salicylic Acids (AHAs/BHAs): These chemical exfoliants are found in many "brightening" toners. They are fantastic for a glow, but they can gradually soften the look of your microblading if applied directly over the hair.
Vitamin C Serums: Vitamin C is a natural brightener. To keep your custom-blended brow shade from shifting or lightening, keep your serum on your forehead, cheeks, and nose—skipping the brows themselves.
Benzoyl Peroxide: Common in acne treatments, this acts as a bleaching agent. If it touches the brows, it can significantly lighten the pigment over time.
The "Halo" Technique
You don’t have to give up your favorite skincare! You just need a "safe zone."
The Strategy: Apply your active products in a "halo" around your brows. By leaving about a half-inch buffer of space, you allow the product to absorb into the skin without it migrating directly into your brow strokes.
Pro-Tip: If you’re using a particularly strong nighttime treatment, you can apply a tiny bit of Aquaphor over your brows first. This acts like a "shield" so your skincare stays exactly where you want it, and your brows stay protected!
Simple & Safe Alternatives
For the skin directly under and around your brows, stick to these pigment-friendly options:
Hyaluronic Acid: Provides amazing hydration without any exfoliating "peel" effect.
Ceramides: Keeps the skin barrier strong and healthy.
Daily SPF: This is your #1 defense! A quick swipe of SPF over your brows every morning protects the pigment from the sun’s natural bleaching effect.
When Your Routine Outpaces Your Pigment
If you’ve noticed your strokes looking a little soft or the color shifting because you're dedicated to your age-defying skincare routine, don't worry—it happens to the best of us, and that’s exactly what a yearly touch-up is for. We can redefine those strokes and get your color back to perfection.
